SYNTHESIS, STRUCTURAL AND OPTICAL PROPERTIES OF SO₂ NANOSTRUCTURE

Dr.J.UDAYASEELAN

SnOnanoparticles were synthesized by wet chemical method using cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) as capping agent. The SnO2 nanoparticles obtained were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), UV-Visible spectrometer and Scanning electron microscope (SEM). The X-ray diffraction showed tetragonal rutile structure with average crystalline size 24 nm. The FTIR spectra confirmed that presence of functional groups and phase purity. From the optical absorption spectra the band gap was calculated as 3.61eV, 3.33 eV and 3.75 eV for pure, PEG and CTAB capped SnO2 nanoparticles respectively. Morphology of SnO2 nanoparticles was investigated using SEM. The maximum photocatalytic degradation efficiency of 95% was observed in PEG capped SnO2 nanoparticles compared to pure and CTAB capped SnO₂ nanoparticles.
