SYNTHESIS , SPECTRAL CHARACTERISATION AND BIOLOGICAL STUDIES OF UNSYMMETRICAL TETRADENTATE LIGAND AND Cu(II), Ni (II) COMPLEX

R.SENBAHAVALLI and K.BUVANA

A Series of mono nuclear Schiff base metal complexes of Cu(II) and Ni(II)  have been synthesized with  Schiff base derived from 3,5- di Chloro salicylaldehyde and O-phenylene  diamine. The structure of the ligand and its metal complexes were characterized through Physico – Chemical studies (UV-VIS, FT-IR, and 1H NMR). The molar conductance value of bivalent metal complexes in DMF indicates the non- electrolytic in nature. In IR spectra, the comparison of Shift in frequency of the complexes with the ligand reveals the coordination of ligand to the metal and the C = N stretching is increased from 1612  to 1658 cm-1 due to complexation . The  d-d Transition of  the  metal  complex provides information about the geometry of the complexes and the transitions are in good agreement for the square planar geometry of all complexes.  The Schiff base  and their complexes have been screened for their in vitro Anti- bacterial activit ( Staphylococcus aureus, Basillus subtilis, E- Coli and Staphylococcus thyphi )  by paper disc method and the result confirms the metal complexes are more potent than ligand.
