SYNTHESIS, CHARACTERIZATION, ANTIBACTERIAL AND LARVICIDAL ACTIVITY OF ZINC OXIDE NANOPARTICLES USING RHINACANTHUS NASUTUS
The present study deals with the synthesis and characterization of zinc oxide nanoparticles using Rhinacanthus nasutus leaf extracts for its antibacterial and larvicidal activity. The synthesized ZnONPs were characterized by using UV-Vis spectrum, FTIR, XRD, FESEM and EDX. The FTIR results predicted the presence of functional groups alkyls and alcohols responsible for the reduction of zinc nitrate into zinc oxide. XRD clearly showed that synthesized nanoparticles were crystalline in nature. FESEM confirms the synthesized nanoparticles were spherical in shape. EDX analysis showed the nanoparticles dispersion occurred in the range of 1 & 8 keV and confirmed the presence of strong metallic signal of zinc. The antibacterial activity was studied against 6 human pathogenic bacterias using ZnONPs and aqueous leaf extracts of Rhinacanthus nasutus. The synthesized ZnONPs confirmed probable activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumonia. The larvicidal activity against Culex quinquefasciatus and Aedes aegypti, in which the highest mortality rate was noticed in both Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus at 20 mg/L and 25 mg/L of ZnONPs. The LC50 values of C. quinquefasciatus and A. aegypti was identified as 91.18, 84.82 mg/L and 61.40, 33.55 mg/L for plant extract and zinc oxide nanoparticles respectively. Therefore, this study provides first report on the larvicidal and antibacterial activity of synthesized ZnONPs against vectors and human pathogens.
