SYNTHESIS AND PHOTOCATALYTIC PROPERTIES OF ZnS NANOPARTICLES IN METHYLENE BLUE DYE DEGRADATION

S.GOMATHI

In the present work, ZnS nanoparticles were synthesized by hydrothermal method using various capping agent like Poly ethylene glycol (PEG) and Cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB). These prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). UV-Visible spectra and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). XRD analysis showed that the samples prepared were having Cubic zinc blended structure. UV-Visible absorption spectra were used to find the optical band gap of the prepared samples and the values obtained as 3.68 eV, 3.69 eV and 3.71 eV for pure. PEG and CTAB capped ZnS nanoparticles respectively. The functional group was analyzed using FTIR spectra Photocatalytic degradation of methelyne blue by the nanoparticles shows that these act as photo catalysts under sunlight irradiation. The MB dye was degraded more then 70.8, 86.5 and 91.6% in the presence of pure and CTAB, PEG capped ZnS nanoparticles.
