SPECTRAL INVESTIGATION OF ZINC SUBSTITUTED HYDROXYAPATITE FOR BIOMEDICAL APPLICATIONS
Chemical formula of Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2 which is very similar to the materials forming the bones in the human body . The synthesized hydroxyapatite with bone- bonding properties is widely used in hard tissue replacement due to their biocompatibility and osteoconductive properties. At present many studies have reported to synthesize the nanometer HAP with different shapes. The as synthesized powders were characterized by FTIR, XRD and SEM techniques. The antibacterial property of HAP and Zn-HAP was tested against the E. coli (gram negative) bacteria. The antibacterial studies confirmed that the Zn substituted HAP exhibited better antibacterial property. The obtained results show the formation of Zn substituted HAP powders with high purity and uniform size distribution. The ultrasonic method of synthesis also proved to be a promising method for the synthesis of Zn-HAP powders. These properties allow us to recommend the synthesized material for medical applications, namely, for the restoration of bone tissue and manufacture of biodegradable implants.
