REVIEW OF DATA ANALYSIS METHODS FOR SEED GERMINATION

Dr.K.Yasmin

The literature has numerous methods for data analysis of seed germination reactions. Here, an effort has been made to compare the information provided by the various approaches, to summarize them, and to look at their advantages and disadvantages. The methods discussed include accelerated failure time analysis, probit analysis, curve-fitting of cumulative germination, heat sums, survival analysis with life tables, and the percentage germination, germination index, coefficient of velocity, and median response time. Data from the tomato (Lycopersicon eseulentum Mill.) germination responses are used to compare and contrast different methods. In addition to the qualitative responses of specific people, population responses that are spread across time are also involved in seed germination. When all viable seeds germinate, standard analysis of variance or regression procedures are adequate for data analysis; but, when any viable seeds fail to germinate, they are improper. These missing (censored) data make statistical analysis and interpretation more difficult. The purpose of germination tests should be to identify the type of censored replies that may then be handled by various statistical techniques referred to as survival analysis.
