RANDOM AMPLIFIED POLYMORPHIC DNA (RAPD) ANALYSIS OF NITROGEN-FIXING CYANOBACTERIA

N.Roopa and G.Punitha

Nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria are ecologically vital microorganisms capable of converting atmospheric nitrogen into biologically available forms, contributing significantly to nitrogen cycling in various ecosystems. This study aimed to investigate the genetic diversity of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria using RAPD analysis. Cyanobacterial strains were collected from diverse habitats, including freshwater bodies, agricultural fields, and natural ecosystems, to encompass a broad range of environments. Genomic DNA was extracted from these strains, and RAPD amplifications were performed using random primers to generate DNA profiles unique to each strain. In conclusion, the RAPD analysis of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria revealed substantial genetic diversity and population structuring within these important microorganisms. These findings contribute to our knowledge of cyanobacterial genetics and their ecological significance in nitrogen cycling. Moreover, the implementation of RAPD analysis serves as a valuable tool for further research into the biodiversity, evolutionary history, and potential applications of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria in sustainable agriculture and environmental management.
