K.GOKULADHASS & P.PAZHANIRAJA

Bioethanol is a renewable and sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, offering potential benefits such as reduced greenhouse gas emissions and decreased dependence on non-renewable energy sources. This study aims to investigate the production and characterization of bioethanol from Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a well-known ethanol-producing yeast, utilizing banana pseudostems as a feedstock. The research begins by exploring the composition of banana pseudostems and their potential as a source of fermentable sugars. Banana pseudostems are rich in cellulose, hemicellulose, and starch, which can be hydrolyzed into fermentable sugars such as glucose and fructose. The enzymatic hydrolysis of these complex carbohydrates is carried out, releasing sugars that are later used for ethanol fermentation.Saccharomyces cerevisiae is selected as the fermenting agent due to its robust ethanol-producing capabilities and established use in industrial ethanol production. The fermentation process is closely monitored, and parameters such as temperature, pH, and fermentation time are optimized to achieve maximum ethanol production. Following fermentation, the bioethanol is separated and purified using appropriate distillation techniques. The bioethanol product is then characterized to determine its quality and suitability as a biofuel. Key characteristics, including ethanol concentration, impurity content, and energy content, are analyzed and compared against industry standards for ethanol-based biofuels. The results demonstrate the feasibility of using banana pseudostems as a viable feedstock for bioethanol production. The findings also highlight the efficiency of Saccharomyces cerevisiae in converting the sugars derived from the pseudostems into ethanol. Moreover, the bioethanol obtained from this process exhibits promising properties, making it a potential candidate for use as an environmentally friendly and renewable fuel source. This study contributes to the ongoing efforts to develop sustainable biofuels and highlights the potential of using agricultural waste, such as banana pseudostems, to generate value-added products like bioethanol. The utilization of waste materials for bioethanol production not only reduces environmental impact but also offers a new avenue for bioenergy production, aiding in the transition towards a more sustainable energy future.
