PHYTOCHEMICAL SCREENING OF LEAF EXTRACTS OF THE MEDICINAL PLANTSYZYGIUMCUMINI

Mrs.S.JEEVA, Mrs.G.PRIYA

Medicinal plants decide therapeutic agents are also a big source of information for a wide variety of chemical constituents which could be developed as drugs with precise selectivity. The preliminary phytochemical screening ofplants is the need of the hour in order to discover and develop novel therapeutic agents with improved efficacy. Medicinal herb is considered to be chemical factory as it contains a multitude of chemical compounds like alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids, terpenes, anthraquinones, saponins, carbohydrates, oils and resins.Natural antimicrobials can be derived mostly from different parts of plants. The shortcomings of the drugs available today propel the discovery of new pharmaco therapeutic agents from medicinal plant research. Plants have limitless ability to synthesize aromatic substances, mostly, phenols or their oxygen substituted derivatives. Today there is growing interest in chemical composition of plant based medicines. The present study deals with study of preliminary phytochemical screening of leaf extract of the medicinal plant Syzygiumcumini using solvents of different polarity. Chemical tests for the screening and identification of bioactive chemical constituents in the medicinal plant under study were carried out with the extract and screened using standard procedures.
