PHYTOCHEMICAL AND ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITIES OF METHANOLIC EXTRACT OF LAWSONIA INERMIS L. BARK

J.SEETHALAKSHMI

Free radicals are responsible for many of the disorders linked to oxidative stress. The goal of current study is to identify naturally occurring antioxidants derived from plants. The current study's objective was to assess the in vitro antioxidant properties of Lawsonia inermis L. bark methanolic extract (MELIB). The goal of the current study was to evaluate the phytochemicals' qualitative, quantitative, and in vitro antioxidant properties for lipid peroxidation, DPPH free radical scavenging, and superoxide radical scavenging. The bark extract contains high levels of secondary metabolites such as flavonoids (73.43 0.26% rutin equivalent), polyphenol (84.70 0.43% gallic acid equivalent), tannins (88.75 0.14% tannic acid equivalent), and terpenoids (68.13 0.31% linalool equivalent). By using the DPPH method (6.930.51 to 62.630.10% inhibition), the superoxide radical scavenging method (1.820.41 to 57.110.18% inhibition), and the ferric chloride-induced lipid peroxidation method (9.870.33 to 80.320.82% inhibition), MELIB demonstrated its ability to scavenge free radicals. Due to the presence of flavonoids, polyphenols, tannins, and terpenoids, the findings of this study suggest that MELIB may be a viable source of natural antioxidants.
