LEAF ANATOMY OF FOUR SPECIES GROWN UNDER CONTINUOUS CO2 ENRICHMENT

Dr.K.Yasmin, M.Indumathi

For corn, soybean, loblolly pine, and sweet gum, the effects of ongoing atmospheric CO2 enrichment on leaf anatomy and morphology were investigated. Throughout the growing season in the field, plants were subjected to continuously monitored CO2 levels of 340, 520, 718, and 910 ppm. After undergoing standard anatomical procedures, samples taken from completely expanded leaves were sectioned transversely at a thickness of 10 m, and the total thickness as well as the thicknesses of the epidermal, palisade, and spongy mesophyll layers were measured. Scanning electron microscopy and epidermal peels were utilized to examine potential alterations in leaf surfaces. Under enriched CO2 conditions, the three C3 species had significant increases in leaf thickness, whereas corn, a C4 plant, did not. There were no discernible trends in the variation of stomatal frequency among treatments, and CO2 treatments had no discernible effect on changes in stomatal indices. Plants from CO2-enriched treatments had leaf tissues with chloroplasts that were denser and more deeply stained by crystal violet.
