EXPRESSION OF TOXIC GENE FROM ACHYRANTHES ASPERA AGAINST DENGUE-CAUSING VECTOR AEDES AEGYPTI

M.GOMATHI and K.GAYATHRI

The toxic gene from Achyranthes aspera was isolated and cloned into a suitable vector for expression. Transgenic Aedes aegypti mosquitoes were generated by introducing the vector containing the toxic gene into the mosquito genome through germ-line transformation. Transgene expression was confirmed through molecular techniques, and the efficiency of gene transfer was evaluated. The study evaluated the impact of the toxic gene expression on the survival and reproductive capabilities of transgenic Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. Bioassays were conducted to assess the insecticidal effect on different life stages of the mosquito, including larval, pupal, and adult stages. The transgenic mosquitoes were also monitored for potential effects on their feeding behavior, flight capacity, and mating success. In conclusion, this study demonstrates the potential of using a toxic gene from Achyranthes aspera as an effective means to combat the dengue-causing vector Aedes aegypti. The successful expression of the toxic gene resulted in a significant reduction in mosquito population size without causing adverse ecological effects.
