EFFECT OF ZINC IN IMMUNE AND ANTIOXIDANT RESPONSE OF SPODOPTERA LITURA (LEPIDOPTERA: NOCTUIDAE)

Dr.C.MARIMUTHU and MS.N.ROOPA

Zinc is a ubiquitous and essential trace element in biological system .In the present study we tested the developmental parameters, immune response and antioxidant response in Spodoptera litura due to the metal zinc exposure. Growth parameters like length, weight, and bioassay were assessed in S. litura. Insect’s immune response like Total Haemocyte Count and Differential Haemocyte Count were studied using metal zinc. Antioxidant response such as Superoxide dismutase, Catalase, Peroxidase, Lipid peroxide, Glutathione peroxide and Glutathione s transferase were assessed at exposure of zinc. Growth parameters were decreased due to the zinc exposure 24 – 120 h but the immune response such as THC and DHC (granulocytes and oenocytes) were increased in 50 – 200 µg/g of zinc exposure in S. litura. Likewise phenoloxidase activity was increased in S. litura by metal zinc. Antioxidiant such as SOD, CAT, Pox, LPO, GST and GPx were induced due to the metal zinc. High concentration of zinc 1000 µg/g act as toxic substance to S. litura but 50 – 200 µg/g of zinc is appropriate for the development , immune and antioxidant response in S.litura
