DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A MICROCONTROLLER BASED DRIVER IMPAIRMENT MONITORING SYSTEM

K.Preethi, S.Sivachandran

Driver fatigue and intoxication is evident from facial features such as eye and head movement. A driver impairment monitoring system has been designed, constructed and tested by monitoring characteristics like face angle, head movement, and blinking eye. The alcohol sensor (MQ3), the tilt sensor, eye blinking sensor, IOT module and microcontroller were used this system. Three sensors are used; the alcohol sensor (MQ3), the tilt sensor or tilt switch and the open eye sensor or eye IR sensor. A GSM module and a microcontroller were used. A reset switch, a display and a buzzer were used. Three sensors and reset switch will send signal to the microcontroller. The alcohol sensor is attached with the cap. If the driver does not respond to the sensor’s alarm, it would turn on a light, which may turn off the engine. Secondly, if the driver closed his eyelids for a certain time, the microcontroller would detect it by an open eye sensor IR and send an alarm. Thirdly, if the driver feels drowsy and tilted his head for a certain time, the microcontroller would sound the alarm. Our proposed solution is an IoT based smart system. When the driver's closed eyes, head tilt for drowsiness, or alcohol consumption were detected for a certain time, the buzzer alerted the driver, and an SMS was sent to the vehicle owners. The deviations of the face angle were measured with 10 participants and the average accuracy was found to be high.
