A PERCEPTION ON PRO – POOR TOURISM – SPECIAL REFERENCE WITH TAMIL NADU
Pro – Poor tourism is defined as “Tourism that generates net benefits for the poor. Benefits may be economic, but they may also be social, environment or cultural. Pro – Poor tourism is not a specific product or sector of tourism, but an approach to the industry. Pro – Poor tourism may also assist to have good relationships between the host country and the visitor. It is a type of tourism in which local residents invite tourists to visit their communities with the provision of overnight accommodation. The local residents earn some sort of income by selling local food and drinks, local bands, local arts, local handicrafts, local boutiques etc. the rural people promote their own culture, life style and food style to different variety of tourists. Through this tourism the respective area would gain some business as well as the employment opportunity to local residents. The former president of APJ ABDUL KALAM says “Almost half of the population of the world lives in rural regions and mostly in a state of poverty” this quote clearly helps us to create more rural employment in the rural area to form the smoother life. The current prime minister of India Mr. NARENDRA MODI states “Tourism provides employment to the poorest of the poor. Gram seller earns something. Auto rickshaw driver earns something. Pakoda seller earns something and Tea seller also earns something” this proves that the tourism industry is one of the industry which helps in poverty alleviation.
