POLYAMIDE AND HIGH-DENSITY POLYETHYLENE NETS GRAFTED WITH POLYETHYLENE GLYCOL HAVE ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY.
The purpose of this study is to use a chemical substance recognized for its antibacterial action to prevent biofouling formation and to build antibacterial layers on aquaculture nets. Two techniques were used to graft polyethylene glycol onto high-density polyethylene and polyamide 6.6 nets. Grafted nets were initially assessed using SEM and XPS to examine the morphological and chemical data. Then, three bacterial strains (Pseudoalteromonas citrea, Pseudoalteromonas elyakovii, and Vibrio harveyi) were measured for their rate of adherence to nets in a laboratory setting to determine the antibacterial activity. The surface of the ungrafted nets was most heavily populated by bacteria, according to the results, and bacterial adherence increased over time.
