ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF PIPER BETEL PLANT LEAF EXTRACT AGAINST UROPATHOGENS EXHIBITING HIGH MULTIPLE ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE
Objectives: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common diseases among all age groups encountered in clinical practice today. The aim of the study was to evaluate the antibacterial activity of Piper betel plant leaf extract against ESBL and Biofilm establishing drug resisting uropathogenic bacteria. In the present study 60 urine samples were collected.
Methods: ESBL producing bacteria confirmed by two methods and also biofilm detection assay. The bioactive compounds fromPiper betelleaf extract by solvent extraction method.
Results: A total of 48 bacterial cultures were isolates belonging to 7 different types of bacteria. The test on bio film forming characteristics indicated that 23 isolates from a total of 48 exhibit positivity with the bacteria Escherichia coli predominating. The detection of extended spectrum beta-lactamase production by double disc synergy and combined disc test showed that its production was highest among the bacteria Escherichia coli (85%) and followed by Klebsiellapneumoniae (66.6%). The acetone leaf extract of Piper betel were tested for antibacterial activity by well diffusion method against Biofilm and ESBL producing organisms. GC-MS analysis of acetone extract revealed the occurrence of 6 bioactive compounds corresponding to major peaks.
Conclusion: As the leaf extract of Piper betelpromises to be a potential drug, the need for exploring the pharmacological properties of its phytochemical and possible application of the plant extract for treating UTI complicated by ESBL and multidrug resistanturopathogens has been suggested.
