IN VITRO ANTIOXIDANT, ANTIDIABETIC, AND ANTIBACTERIAL PROPERTIES OF MORINGA OLEIFERA LEAF EXTRACTS
Moringa oleifera, commonly known as the drumstick tree, has long been recognized for its versatile medicinal and nutritional properties. In this study, we aimed to investigate the in vitro antioxidant, antidiabetic, and antibacterial potential of Moringa oleifera leaf extracts.
For the antioxidant evaluation, aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Moringa oleifera leaves were prepared. The total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) of the extracts were determined using spectrophotometric methods. Additionally, various antioxidant assays, including 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay, were conducted to evaluate the free radical scavenging and reducing properties of the extracts.
To assess the antidiabetic potential, we performed an alpha-amylase inhibition assay. The inhibitory activity of the leaf extracts against alpha-amylase was examined, which is a key enzyme involved in carbohydrate metabolism. This assay provides insights into the ability of Moringa oleifera extracts to modulate postprandial glucose levels and potentially manage diabetes.
Furthermore, the antibacterial activity of Moringa oleifera leaf extracts was evaluated using agar well diffusion and broth microdilution methods against a panel of clinically relevant bacterial strains, including Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) bacteria.
In conclusion, our findings highlight the substantial in vitro antioxidant, antidiabetic, and antibacterial properties of Moringa oleifera leaf extracts. These results warrant further investigations to identify the specific bioactive compounds responsible for these activities and to assess their efficacy in in vivo models and clinical trials. Incorporating Moringa oleifera leaves or their extracts into dietary and therapeutic interventions may offer beneficial health effects, particularly for individuals with diabetes or bacterial infections.
