BIOCOMPATIBLE BIVALENT METAL COMPLEXES AS ANTI-BACTERIAL AND ANTI-OXIDANT AGENTS: SYNTHESIS,SPECTRAL CHARACTERIZATION AND ELECTROCHEMICAL STUDY

P.KALAISELVI and A.DEEPA

Cu(II) complexes of the type M2L2 have been synthesised with Schiff base derived from 2-amino pyridine , ethylacetoacetate and various diamines. The complexes were insoluble in common organic solvents but soluble in DMF and DMSO.The measured molar conductance values in DMF indicate that the complexes are electrolytic in  nature. All the metal complexes have been fully characterised with the help of elemental analyses, molecular weights, molar conductance values, magnetic moments and spectral studies. The analytical data helped to elucidate the structure of the metal complexes. The Schiff bases are found to act as a hexadentate ligand leading to a octahedral geometry for the Cu(II) complex. The metal complex cleaves pUC18 DNA in presence of H2O2.The Schiff  bases and its complexes have been screened for their antibacterial activity against four bacterial stains (Staphylococcus aureus , Escherchia coli,Bacillus subtilis and Klesbsilla pneumonia) by disc diffusion method. It is also found that all the metal complexes have potent biocidal activity than the free ligand. The anti oxidant activity of the Schiff base complexes was determined by DPPH method in vitro.
