ADSORPTION STUDY OF METAL IONS BY BIOLOGICALLY SYNTHESIZED CHITOSAN/SnO2 NANOCOMPOSITES

R. RANJITHA and Dr.M.USHARANI

Adsorption of heavy metal ions from the effluent is a major concern to protect the environment from pollution. This paper presented the preparation of chitosan/SnO2 nanocomposite for the application of adsorption of heavy metal ions. Chitosan from carb shells were prepared by deacetylation processing of chitin. Chitosan was further converted into nanochitosan by simple stirring process. The prepared nanochitosan were characterized using FT-IR, XRD and SEM with EDX analytical techniques. Nanochitosan exhibit the size of about 20-40 nm. Biosynthesis of SnO2 nanoparticles were carried out using the banana stem extract without the use of any external agents. Biologically synthesized SnO2 nanocomposites were elucidated using FT-IR, XRD and SEM analysis. SnO2 nanoparticles presented the nanosize of about 40 nm.  Further chitosan/SnO2 nanocomposites were prepared by simple stirring process. Similar analytical techniques were used for the chitosan/SnO2 nanocomposites nanocomposites and showed the nanosize of about 40 nm. Adsorption behavior of chitosan/SnO2 nanocomposites were studied towards the heavy metal Co(II) ion. The prepared chitosan/SnO2 nanocomposites presented good adsorption efficiency against heavy metal ion.
