SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF COPPER ALUMINOSILICATE NANOCOMPOSITES BY SOL-GEL PROCESS FOR CATALYTIC ACTIVITY

Dr.R.SHANMUGAM and M.SARANYA

Two different samples of copper aluminosilicate (CAS) nanocomposite for application as catalyst in azo bonddegradation were prepared by the incorporation of copper nanoparticles into the mesoporous aluminosilicate framework obtained by a simple sol–gel method followed by calcinations at various temperatures without using any templates. The above prepared nanocomposites were characterized using thermal studies, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX). Crystalline nature and particle size of copper oxide present in the aluminosilicate framework was determined from powder XRD pattern. Surface morphology of the catalysts and their elemental compositions were obtained from SEM and EDAX techniques, respectively. The commercial azo dyemethyl red was used for azo bond degradation. The kinetics of catalytic activities was studied using UV–VIS spectroscopy.
