SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF BIOCERAMIC COMPOSITE FOR BIOMEDICAL APPLICATION

K.BUVANA and Dr.P.S.SUJA PON MINI

Synthetic hydroxyapatite (HAP,Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2) is a well-known bio material used in orthopaedic applications due to its excellent biocompatibility and bone-bonding ability. For this purpose, Cu and biopolymer substituted HA (Cu/PMMA/HA) nanomaterials were synthesized by chemical precipitation technique. Substitution of Cu and PMMA enhance the biocompatibility, bioactivity, cytotoxicity and mechanical properties of HA. The synthesized bio nanomaterial was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X- ray diffraction analysis, Scanning electron microscopy and Energy dispersive X-ray analysis and cell viability, anticancer and antimicrobial studies respectively. This novel biocompatible and antibacterial material can potentially be applied in orthopedic application.
