Abstract :
This Ph.D. dissertation explores the theme of love in the works of Jane Austen, one of the most celebrated and influential authors the 19th century. Through a comprehensive analysis of Austen’s novels, including “Pride and Prejudice,” “Sense and Sensibility,” and “Emma” this study aims to shed light on the multifaceted nature of love as depicted by Austen and its significance in her literary canon. The research begins with an examination of Austen’s portrayal of romantic love, focusing on the complexities of courtship and marriage. Furthermore, this dissertation explores the theme of familial love in Austen’s works. Austen’s novels feature strong bonds between characters, such as the enduring friendship between Elizabeth Bennet and Charlotte Lucas or the sisterly affection shared by the Dash wood sisters. By examining characters like Elizabeth Bennet and Emma Woodhouse, this study uncovers Austen’s exploration of the importance of self-acceptance and personal growth in the pursuit of love and happiness. Finally, this research situates Austen’s portrayal of love within the broader social and cultural context of the Regency era. It examines how societal norms and expectations influenced the understanding and expression of love during Austen’s time, and how Austen both adhered to and challenged these conventions through her narratives.
