Abstract :
In this chapter, while obtaining the power series solution of some special types of differential equation. We come across functions of Legendre, Hermit, Laguerre and Bessel. We call the functions of function of differential equations. Sometimes these are also known as special functions. The special functions which arise as the solution of the second order linear differential equations have considerable degree of unity in the sense that they have properties similar to each other and their wide applications are more or less the same. In this chapter we shall study the properties of these functions in greater detail. Differential equation arise from many problems is oscillations of mechanical and electrical systems, bending of beams, conduction of heat, velocity of chemical reactions etc. And as such play a very important role in all modern scientific and engineering studies. The Legendre’s differential equation occurs in many physical and engineering problems involving spherical geometry and gravitation.
