A STUDY ON PERSPECTIVE OF LISTENING SKILLS IN FIRST YEAR UNDERGRADUATES OF ENGLISH LITERATURE
Knowing how to grasp information while listening is a sign of good listening skills. A good listening skill is the capacity to understand information. Even when English language learners have been studying the language for some time, listening is still one of the most challenging abilities for them to master. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to learn more about the difficulties that first year undergraduate students faced while engaging in listening activities, their opinions on the topic, and the elements that contributed to their success. A series of listening tests and a questionnaire were then given out. The underlying issues in students' listening abilities, addressing difficulties, key listening impediments, and learning experiences were examined using both quantitative and qualitative data. Most of them felt that listening lessons are difficult for them because of the problems and difficulties in teaching and learning activities. In addition, 5 factors affected students' listening skills; lack of practice, limited vocabulary, native accent, pronunciation and unpleasant study material. In addition, knowing the structure of the English language and having good opportunities in the listening classes helped to solve some challenges in listening. In addition, students understood the importance of listening, but they still needed the help of teachers and some other students in learning and educational activities. In short, it can be stated that good listening skills were still a challenge for first-year students of the English language department.
